The last week has been filled with nothing but Dallas Cowboys drama, just like Jerry Jones wanted. If he couldn’t be playing in the playoffs, he needed to be the talk of the media somehow.
Now with Mike McCarthy out, and the search for a new coach, and although he did not call the plays, Brian Schottenheimer, the offensive coordinator contract, also expired and is now on the outside looking in.
With that said, the Dallas Cowboys are going to need to replace the two most important things on the offensive side of the ball and that is the head coach and the man who will be calling the plays and drawing things up.
With both gone, and nobody hired as of now, the Dallas Cowboys offense is now going to be learning something brand new for the third time in the last four years.
Offensive Coordinator
So, although Mike McCarthy was the head coach, he called plays the last two years, even with that, the Cowboys are still losing their offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer.
Serving as the offensive coordinator in Dallas in 2023 and 2024. Though he didn’t call plays with coach Mike McCarthy handling those duties, he played an integral role in quarterback Dak Prescott throwing an NFL-best 36 touchdown passes and the Cowboys finishing first in scoring in 2023.
Schottenheimer’s contract is up, and with McCarthy out, I would guess that they have no hopes of bringing Schottenheimer back either, which makes this offseason even more difficult for Jerry Jones.
He was more behind the scene of things anyway, so let’s not lose sleep over losing Schottenheimer, but the problem will still be around losing both the head coach and the offensive coordinator, two key guys the Dallas Cowboys will have to replace very soon.
Head Coach
Don’t even get me started on this, I have no idea what Jerry Jones is going to do.
It was said that former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh will be interviewed, as well as Leslie Frazier. While no talks are currently scheduled, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and Jones have spoken about the role after the franchise parted ways with Mike McCarthy on Monday.
I am not a fan of Saleh being the head coach, and the only reason Jerry would do so is because he knows that he can still be in the spotlight and not have to worry about him trying to tell him no.
As for Frazier, let’s be real here, this all part of the Rooney rule, he won’t be the guy hired.
With these two guys being the first two to be interviewed, I have a strong feeling that Jerry knows exactly who he wants. Whether that is Kellen Moore, Jason Witten, or Sanders I am not sure.
Moore is in his first season with the Eagles, and like Sanders he has familiarity with Jones and the Cowboys after playing there for three seasons and then serving as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 2018-2022.
I would not be a fan of that, I hated him in Dallas as the OC and this would be even worse. It is not hard to be good at your job when you can call a handoff to Barkley 35 times a game.
The problem is, will one of these young guys want to come to Dallas and deal with all the drama that comes along with it. It is hard to tell. I just hate being in this situation, not even having the slightest clue about who might be hired.
We all can assume, but we have no idea who the next guy is going to be.
