Michael Irvin: Cowboys QB Dak Prescott “Closest Thing To Tom Brady”

The Cowboys finally inked franchise quarterback Dak Prescott to a contract extension this week, making him (in his own words) a “Cowboy for life.” Prescott has obviously earned the deal, beginning with an all-time rookie season and improving year after year to get to the point he’s at today.

Dak Prescott is the unquestioned leader of America’s Team, and the reaction from his peers when the news of his contract broke should tell you all you need to know about him as a person.

Cowboys great Michael Irvin is also aboard the hype train. Irvin joined ESPN’s Stephen A Smith earlier this week to make a bold comparison for Dak Prescott…Tom Brady.

“We have the closest thing in the National Football League to Tom Brady at quarterback now. That’s what we have. Because Dak Prescott has the ability to do what Tom does, and he has the leadership like Tom” – Michael Irvin.

Anytime you bring up the name of the most accomplished quarterback of all time, you’re going to get a strong reaction. But Irvin’s point makes sense. Prescott has shown his capabilities as a leader and as a quarterback, putting him in the upper echelon of stars around the league. He is the definition of a franchise quarterback, and has just the right temperament/personality to be the face of the Dallas Cowboys for the next decade.

Now, I’d personally be happy to see Prescott win the number of rings that Brady has, but that obviously will depend on what ends up around him. Tom Brady is an all-time great quarterback, but there’s no question that coaching and defensive talent have gave him an edge during each championship run.

Football is the ultimate team sport. As great as we expect Dak Prescott and this loaded offense to be in 2021, they’ll need to get some timely stops on the other side of the ball to compete with the conference’s elite.

What do you think?

  1. This comparison , though it may hold some water on Leadership ,THAT IS THE ONLY COMPARISON BETWEEN THE 2 , TOM BRADY , not only does he have Dak obviously beat at SBs , if want to go the stats route , shall I introduce Brady having 50 tds in a single season ? Or 500 yards passing in a SB and still losing said SB ? I digress

their is no comparison , Leadership is Important , especially for a QB , BUT IT TAKES A LOT MORE THAN THAT TO BE COMPARED TO THE GOAT , quite frankly I think this is disrespectful to Brady , to just say for a QB all you need to do in order to be comparable to Brady is be a Leader , then hell , you can name off just about half the league , there’s more to it ,

CLUTCH GENE – ability to make big time plays in big time games , the killer instinct

SELFLESSNESS – such as Brady taking pay cuts (like what he just did with Bucs reportedly) and him being the main target of criticism of his own HCs Belicheck and Arians , in order to serve as an example for the team

MENTALITY – We just saw this on display in the commentary between him and Tyrann Matthieu , the fiery spirit , the thinking of no matter how much better you are than me , or how far we go down , I’VE GOT YOU , I’m just a 6th rounder , and yet i’m gonna kick your ass

And the narrative of him having players on D and a HC again holds some water on why he’s won , but if that’s the reason they win , then why the hell doesn’t Jimmy G win all the time ?

Belicheck didn’t win before Brady as HC , he has yet to win so far a year without Brady , and we’ll see if he’ll ever do it without him , I highly doubt it

So no , there isn’t a comparison between Dak and Brady , call me back when he wins 1 SB , till then STOP THE BLASPHEMY

  2. And now you see why people hate the Cowboys. One contract extension and now the guy is Tom Brady and they’re going to the superbowl. Why can’t it just be that they’re favorites to win the division or something along those lines?

  3. One comment for Michael Irvin………..jajajajajaja

He shouldn’t even mention Dak Prescott as being in some sort of a close category than the GOAT. wmgates is right. This is why people hate the Cowboys !!!

  4. Never was a big fan of post playing days Irvin and what he brings to the analyst table.

Comments like this only serve to dilute his credibility !

  5. Dak Prescott is no way like Tom Brady there is no comparison. Prescott hasn’t even got a champion game under his belt yet. NO COMPARISON.. THERE IS ONLY ONE TOM BRADY AND HES THE GOAT!!!!

  6. I AM THE BIGGEST COWBOY FAN ON THIS PLANET BUT THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO TOM BRADY AND I HATE THE GUY HES SO DAMN GOOD. DAK PRESCOTT ONLY CAN BEAT TEAMS AT 500 OR LESS. HE CAN NEVER BEAT A 12-4 TEAM OR KANSAS CITY. HES NOT WORTH THAT MONEY THEY PAID HIM. I CAN BET ANYONE HE WILL NEVER WIN A SUPER BOWL. He is only good from the 20 yard line to the 20 yard line. Dak if your reading this you suck. Go to the giants.

  7. It most definitely isn’t a disrespect to Tom Brady because for one Michael Irvin put Brady up on as high a pedal stool as he could by basically saying Tom Brady is the measuring stick that other QB’s need to compare themselves with. Secondly he said Dak has the respect of his team. Winning Super Bowls enables Dak to get the respect from sports fans, writers and others but he can have teams respect by way he leads and that is what he does is leads. Dak was leading league last year at time of his injury. Dak is most definitely doing his part. Cowboys 100%

  8. Michael, that’s just NOT TRUE IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, and EVERYONE with an above room temperature IQ knows it. So what is the point. Well in this upside down world, people can have their suspicions.
